We are not meant to be controlled by emotions or feelings, we are to take control. We should never allow emotions to get out of control. Emotions are not the truth, truth is only found in God. God is our source of truth and whenever our emotions are flaring up, we should always go back to the Truth.
Emotions are part of the soul, they are helpful and enable us to feel and be able to identify with our environment and with those around us.
However, if we allow emotions to control us, a lot of damage can be done, whether to ourselves or to those around us. We should watch out and not allow the negative emotions to linger on for long. When and if we allow such emotions to linger, such start taking root in our hearts and with time they manifest as fruit – what we do or say is a manifestation of what is in our hearts. The moment we allow bad seeds to take root, only bad fruit comes out. When we keep meditating on the bad and on negativity, eventually that will ‘burst out’ from us. Eventually, whatever we have allowed into our lives will manifest.
The Bible tells us that we are to take every thought captive and bring it into obedience to Christ. We are to meditate only on the good things, only on godly things, and whatever is not of God is to be taken captive and brought into subjection to the Word of God. In life, we go through much but eventually, we actually have a choice on how we approach whatever comes our way.
We can either choose to be defeated and have negative unpleasant attitudes or we can come into agreement with God and choose to be thankful in every circumstance.
One part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit is self-control. Self-control enables us to have the ability to hold back and realize that not everything needs to be said or done. We should not be reactors but should be able to respond appropriately to situations that warrant a response, and also respond with love.
Love is not an emotion or a feeling though there are emotions and feelings that come up when we love other people. We should watch out and not be people who are controlled by emotions. We have to realize that we have the ability by the power of the Holy Spirit to live a godly, Spirit-led life.
Acting out in emotions is a fleshly way of living, and we know what the fruits of the flesh are. Nothing good comes out of a flesh-led life. A Spirit-led life requires dying to self and crucifying the flesh. We cannot claim to be submitted to the Lord if we are the loudest, the most abusive, the angriest, the most offended, or the most easily annoyed people – such things show just how much we are led by the flesh.
Outbursts of negative emotions are not of God. Die to self.
The Bible tells us to set our minds on things above and not on the things that are on earth, for the mind set on the flesh is death but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace. When we realize that things of this world shall come to pass, then we will stop allowing things of the world and people to steal our joy. Nothing should drive us to a point where we start acting out of control.
If there is anything in our lives that is causing turmoil, whether internal or external, we are to take all of those things at the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. He does a much better job anyway, He is all-powerful, and He tells us to give our burdens to Him and we will find rest for our souls. Let us ask God to search us and know our hearts, to try us and know our anxieties, and see if there is any wicked way in us, and to lead us into the way everlasting.
When we set our minds on eternity with the Lord, the peace of God floods our lives and guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Blessings.
