Human beings have a sinful nature. From the time we are born, we all lean towards sin. Our sinful nature controls us up until the moment we accept the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. It is common to hear people say how good they are and so many people thrive on the praises of men, they like hearing people say to them how good or nice they are. It is common for us to think of ourselves as good and better than others. Yet, the Bible tells us that all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment.
It is common for us to compare ourselves with other people and tell ourselves how good we are because we do not live life like how many other people live theirs.
It is common to hear people talk of another person and say how good and nice that person is. Somehow most people think they are good people because of the good deeds they do and the nice words they use. The flawed thinking that human beings are inherently good is what has kept many people from seeking the only One who is good, that is, God. Remember, all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment.
For there is not a just man upon earth, that does good, and sins not. Ecclesiastes 7:20.
When we think that we are good, then we see no reason for repentance. If we think that we have a ‘good heart’, we will elevate ourselves to a higher position than other people. That will make us look down on others instead of praying for them.
Many people think of themselves as good yet they are traveling along the wide path that leads to hell.
None of us is good. Apart from God, we are all fallen and there is no goodness in us. Apart from God, all of us would end up walking the wide path that leads to eternal destruction. There is no goodness in us. Our deeds that we think are good cannot save us. All our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment. No matter how much we try, by ourselves, we can never enter heaven. Without Jesus Christ, all of us would be condemned for eternity.
As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: their feet are swift to shed blood: destruction and misery are in their ways: and the way of peace have they not known: there is no fear of God before their eyes. Romans 3:10-18.
When you follow the lives of people who claim to be good, you will find out that their lives greatly fall short. No one can achieve righteousness by themselves. All our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment. It is pride that keeps people from admitting how fallen they are and how in need of God they are.
The people who claim to be good and those who are referred to by others as good fall short greatly. God is holy and none of us can achieve holiness by ourselves. That is why God gave His Son, who was sinless, as a sacrifice to die for us and achieve what we could never achieve by ourselves. Only through Jesus Christ do we become the righteousness of God.
For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21.
When outside of God, we are sinful human beings. We may try to do good but our good deeds can never justify us. All our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment.
Our attempts to be good can never measure up unless we allow God to empower us by His Spirit. Any good we attempt by ourselves in our human strength outside of God really is like filthy rags. God’s standard is holiness, which we can never achieve through human strength. We are only made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ.
