Social media is defined as, “computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks.” A virtual community is “a social network of individuals who interact through specific social media, potentially crossing geographical and political boundaries in order to pursue mutual interests and goals.”
A virtual community is different from a traditional community. The traditional community is defined as “a group of interacting people living in a common location. The word is often used to refer to a group that is organized around common values and is attributed with social cohesion within a shared geographical location, generally in social units larger than a household.”
Social media networks have come with many advantages. However, sadly, social media has also become satan’s playground.
Many social media friends would not pass as friends in real life. Yet, people still spend hours upon hours online interacting with and chatting with perceived “friends”.
The enemy is using social media to advance his evil schemes.
Most people are so obsessed with what is trending, one just has to wonder where those trends come from, most of them seem to be conceived straight from hell. People blindly follow other people, people blindly conform to the trending patterns of this world. There is so much evil associated with social media, yet, so many people remain blind to the impact that such networks have in our society. The works of the flesh are manifesting fully in social media.
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like, of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21.
If you want to see the fruits of the flesh, go to social media. If you want to see full-blown showing off go to social media, if you want to see where sexual predators thrive go to social media, if you want to see abuse of every kind go to social media, if you want to see a place where people take advantage of other people go to social media, if you want to see where people are always comparing their lives with other people go to social media, if you want to see where fornication and adultery are conceived go to social media, if you want to see full-blown lust go to social media, if you want to see where gossip and slander thrive go to social media, if you want to see where suicidal ideas start go to social media, if you want to see and hear vile language go to social media; social media, satan’s playground!
How many people have committed suicide because of bullying and abuse by other people who are hiding behind the screens of their phones and computers? How many families have been broken because of social media? How many friendships and relationships have ended because of social media? Have many people’s lives have been damaged because of social media? Social media has enabled us to see the fruits of people’s lives; what is in people’s minds comes out through what they post. Good trees bear good fruits and bad trees bear bad fruits.
Social media is the place where people go to be liked, admired, and validated.
Most people will do anything to get some likes, to get some comments, to get some shares of what they post. It is a place where it is everyone for themselves most of the time. Most people post things for selfish reasons, to attract attention to themselves, or get many followers, or to make some extra coins, or to gain fame. It really goes back to oneself in many cases.
Social media has become an idol for most people. It is the place where many people run to first, it is the place where many people take their problems, it is the place where many people go to seek advice.
Social media has taken the first position in most people’s lives. People will spend hours upon hours online but the same people do not have time to study God’s Word or to pray or to go to church or to cultivate close relationships with family and friends around them. It is such a sad situation because the enemy has blinded so many people. Social media has become the ‘in-thing’ and most cannot even remember their lives without social media, and most people would not even know what to do with their time without social media. In social media is where most people live their lives.
The Bible tells us that we cannot serve two masters.
No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Matthew 6:24.
Is social media your god? Is social media your master? You have to choose whom you will serve. Is Jesus Christ the Lord of your life or are you consumed with the cares and worries of this world?
In itself, social media is not bad. It is the position that it occupies in your heart and what you use it for that is the determinant factor.
We have to realize that so many people are getting lost because of social media networks. We have to see social media for what it is and never place it in a position in our lives that it should never be. If social media is negatively affecting your relationship with God then it is high time to cut it off and put God first. If you are using social media for the wrong reasons it is time to repent and re-examine your life. If what you do and say is not pleasing to God then it is not worth it.
Why do you post what you post? What is your heart’s motive? May each one of us examine ourselves.
If you use social media, use it for good. If you use social media, be on guard that it does not occupy a place in your heart that should only be reserved for God. Be wise. Not everything needs to be said, not everything needs to be shared on social media.
Do not be conformed to the patterns of this world, instead, be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Live a life that is pleasing to God, whether online or offline. Let your life be a testimony of the Lord’s faithfulness. Do not boast, be humble and God will lift you up.
But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6.
