The trap of vain glory

Vain Glory

Share

We live in a world of vain glory, where people praise themselves instead of praising God, where people are showing off, where people want to be recognized, where people do and say things to be liked, where people bring each other down so as to feel good about themselves. People want to be noticed, they want what they do and say to be recognized, people are in competition instead of loving one another, people are lovers of money, fame, and power.

When something significant occurs in a person’s life, God is not mentioned in the equation most times, when people succeed, pride puffs up. People have become full of self to the extent that they do not recognize others. As long as our lives are good we have no regard for others, as long as we maintain our image it does not matter whose life is ruined in the process, as long as we do not get hurt we do not pay attention to those who are hurting or to those we hurt in the process.

Most people have a form of godliness but deny the power of God. Most people have become religious but do not know God. It is a form of deception whereby people do things in the name of God yet they are far away from Him, they use the name of God to prosper in their own ways, they use the name of God to get money, fame, and status in society, to get recognition, to make a name for themselves.

There are those who walk on cloud nine and consider themselves untouchable; they abuse and mistreat others as they wish, they use others as they wish, they are puffed up with prideful ego. Whether it is because of wealth, their looks, the size of the crowd they attract on their side, the number of followers they have, their perceived successes in life; people use such things to show off.

We approach God with an attitude of self-exaltation then we start wondering why our prayers are not being answered. We live a double life then we start wondering why things are falling apart. We portray one image to the public and another in private then we start wondering why there is so much internal turmoil in our lives. We forget that God does not bless sin, we forget God does not like hypocrisy, we forget God detests a proud look and a haughty spirit.

We have become jealous people, we do not want to see others succeed, we lie our way through everything, we live a lie most times, we say one thing with our lips yet our hearts are somewhere else, we gossip and slander – one moment we are talking with someone then the next moment we are talking about them, we want to be seen as good while we portray the other person as bad, we enter people’s lives with the wrong motives and then try to destroy them and leave them in ruins. We live for the world. We forget the god of this world and the father of all lies is Satan and if we do not repent and go back to God we will end up in hell with the devil. We have become Satan’s toys without even knowing it.

The Bible tells us that all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

When we rob God of His glory and place it on ourselves, we start serving the dark side. God will not participate in vain human glory, our bodies are but dust, we came with nothing in this world and we leave with no material thing. Our treasure is what we have stored in heaven by service to God and humanity in love. Vain glory leads to destruction. If all we want is earthly praise then we have surely got our reward; vain glory is all the reward we get. The earthly treasures we build will be eaten by moths and locusts.

We should never do anything with selfish ambitions, we are to love others as ourselves, and in everything we do, love should always prevail.

Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Philippians 2:3.

We should not desire vain glory, neither should we provoke one another or envy each other. Life without God is vanity, we can gain the whole world yet end up losing our souls. Let us be on the watch. Let us not open a doorway for the enemy. Let us not be full of greed or self-glorification. We will be judged according to the life we have lived on this earth, we will be held accountable for every word and action.

Do not multiply your words of pride, let not vain-glory come out of your mouth; for Jehovah is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed. 1 Samuel 2:3.

All the glory, honor, and praise belong to God; may we never forget that. God is our creator, He owns everything including life itself. We are His creation and creation can never be higher than its creator. Let us never forget our position. The Bible says that whoever exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. God does not look at external appearances, He looks at the heart.

Humble yourself before the Lord, and He will exalt you. James 4:10.

Blessings.
